Even before I moved to Lahore two years ago, I had this place listed in my wish list. Whenever, we planned a trip with friends or colleagues, I always suggested this place but unfortunately no such plan was made while our stay there. Two days ago, before moving to Islamabad, my Bestie came all the way from Islamabad to Lahore just so both of us could drive together from Lahore to Islamabad the very next day.
So we three (Aiza, me and Atif Aslam) were singing on the motorway from Lahore to Islamabad in my car full of luggage on Friday, the 16th of March. Suddenly, we saw the board leading to Hiran Minar. We knew this was our last chance of seeing this place as I’m leaving Lahore soon. We both looked at each other with a twinkle in our eyes and exclaimed ‘Let’s go!’. We got really excited and turned the steering wheel towards Sheikhupura. Spontaneous plans are the best. We had a wonderful time there. A day well spent.
Hiran Minar is located in Sheikhupura about 40 km Northwest of Lahore. It is accessible via M2 Motorway which connects Lahore to Islamabad. It was built in 1620 during the reign of mughal emperor Jahangir. Inside the complex, there is a proper car park, library and a cafe. There were many families there for a picnic. The general public there loved starring at women and tried to pass comments at every opportunity they got. When we went to buy the ticket, the cashier said ‘Check karo yaar’ (check them out) and then asked us which country we are from. He seemed surprised to know we are locals. I guess his definition of a local was a sheikhupurian. The water was clean and looked beautiful. There was boating facility too. It is a great day out for families. Highly recommended. Best idea is to visit the place while traveling from Lahore to Islamabad on your own car. Great stopover.
