It is about 3.5 hours’ drive from Islamabad. I went with Discover Pakistan. As you have to go through Army Cantt, you have to get permission beforehand. The fort is accessible through an exquisite boat-ride which totally took my breath away. The water is so clean, it reflects all the rocky islands around. The boat-ride is about an hour long (I wish it was longer?). Every minute of that ride was a dream.
Once you reach the hill with the fort, you get off the boat and climb stairs to the top. The view from the top level of the fort is just out of the world. It is located near Mirpur city. Three sides of the hilltop are surrounded by Jhelum River which falls into the huge reservoir of Mangla Dam. It was built by a Gakkhar named Toglu as recorded by traveler and geologist Frederick Drew. This place is one of the few hidden treasures. If you haven’t been there yet, you absolutely must! #dontmissit?
